About

At its most basic level, the book club seeks to critically analyze the historical significance of passing. In doing so, this student-led initiative will create a forum in which senior undergraduate students can critically and creatively collaborate with peers on the topic of identity while working on skills that can be easily transferred to their future academic endeavors. Often in classes many students use marks/grades as a determinate of success in their academics. The book club is intended give students the opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired in their classes to new settings. Most of the students that are participating in the club are planning on attending graduate school; the skills that we are practicing are essential for their development as academics and researchers. Ultimately, the book club is intended to help students maintain their intellectual creativity and curiosity outside of the conventional timeframes and spaces allocated by the university.

The book club will be working with the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto (http://www.utoronto.ca/cdts/).  The club is tackling issues that are apropos to the Centre’s main areas of focus and research. The project is aligned with the Centre’s goals; it provides intellectual creativity and innovative teaching methods to encourage student development.
